"Google on Wednesday called an end to its ambitious Wave project, an online collaboration service that it once hailed as a potential replacement for e-mail. The company said the service, launched with great fanfare a year ago, would be closed at the end of this year, though the technology behind it could be used in future Google projects."

The University of Illinois system was awarded a $150,000 one-year grant from the Department of Education with the help of U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin to develop open-source textbooks for students. Charles Evans, University of Illinois associate vice president for academic affairs, will be heading the project.

"The study primarily focused on the effect of high-tech communication on the building of new relationships between people joining a team for the first time, Rockmann said. To conduct the study, a group of 200 undergraduate students were placed into teams and faced two hypothetical scenarios, and were asked to conduct various tasks in person and using e-mail and video-conferencing.
